Making Malay Culture Everlasting
Brunei Darussalam - The Malay Culture is an excellent foundation of the Malay civilisation development. The slide of cultural practice in a community will give an impact on the foundation. The Malay race in this country is not an exception. The matter was emphasised by the Director of Research, Development and International Affairs, Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports at a Malay Cultural Perpetuity Workshop. The workshop is being held at the Language and Literature Bureau in Berakas.
Dr Mataim bin Bakar in his opening address, underscored the responsibility of parents, the school, government agencies, and non-government bodies, or NGOs, in perpetuating the Malay culture. He added that it is not only the task of the culturalists. Dr. Mataim said that in the context of the Language and Literature Bureau, it is the duty of the department to alert the community on how important it is for us to appreciate our own culture, particularly pertaining to language and literature. Both these components need to be empowered. In other words, while the country strives to become a modern and prosperous nation, the space for us to preserve our culture should also be given serious attention.
The five-day workshop is an effort to uphold the status and sovereignty of the Malay Language through literature. The workshop takes the form of a performing art staged with the use of poems as the medium that is read out or sung. The workshop aims to stimulate the growth of young talents particularly the youth in writing, as well as stage management and directing. It is also to expose the workshop participants to the intermezzo diversified creativity method, that is looking at the stage as a creativity platform that plays a pivotal role in stage performances such as musical poetry, poetic songs, dances and theater. This element does not merely play the role as an accompaniment but also as a nuance to the poetry itself.
