Australian and Indonesian Youths Hand in Hand in Wakatobi

Jakarta, Indonesia - This week participants of the Australia-Indonesia Youth Exchange Program (AIYEP) will live on Wangiwangi Island in Wakatobi regency to help with community development projects.

“The collaboration on this level is just one of the practical ways for Australia and Indonesia to work together as neighbors and partners,” said Australian Ambassador to Indonesia Greg Moriaty, in a press release received on Thursday.

Sanchi Davis, the Australian Embassy’s Cultural Attaché, added that during their stay in Wangiwangi, the participants would live with families in two villages, Patuno and Waelumo. Together with the local people, they will scope the tourism potential of Wangiwangi, which is known for its maritime beauty.

The AIYEP program has been ongoing since 1982. Since it was first launched, more than 870 Australian and Indonesian youths have taken part in the program. Wakatobi Regent, Hugua, was an alumnus of the AIYEP program in 1986 – 1987.

Moriarty welcomed the arrival of the Australian youths in Indonesia and was happy with their enthusiasm for more experience and a better understanding of Indonesian culture.
