Brunei Performers Head to Manila for International Dance Festival

Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam - A Cultural delegation from the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports left for Manila via Bangkok yesterday morning to participate in an international dance festival, which will be held at the Manila Hotel at Rizal Park, Manila, from April 26-30.

Led by script writer Serudin Damit, the delegation comprises a cultural trainer cum choreographer, Norsiah Othman, and eight dancers. Serudin will also present a working paper entitled Dance in Brunei at the 'Dance Exchange: The Philippines International Dance Workshop and Festival'.

With the theme of 'Cultural Connectivity through Dance', the dance exchange is organised by the National Commission for Culture and Arts (NCCA) and National Committee on Dance in cooperation with the Halili-Cruz School of Ballet as part of celebrations for International Dance Day 2011, which falls on April 29.

Serudin said the dance exchange aims to provide a venue for interaction as well as facilitate learning among dancers, dance teachers, choregraphers, physical education teachers; establish an international event which will become a cultural destination for foreign artistes; provide new ideas and inspiration to stimulate the creativity of dance educators, directors and choreographers; showcase different dance forms by foreign and local dancers; facilitate cultural exchange and understanding; and strengthen the network among dance organisations and directors.

"With the participation of artistes from Asean, this activity also aims to promote awareness and appreciation within the region, which will contribute to the building of an Asean community envisioned for 2015.

"This activity is one of the highlights of the International Dance Day 2011 celebration as the Philippines continues to hold the title 'Asean Cities of Culture' for the year 2011," he said. The delegation will return home on May 1.
