Sayang Brunei, History Carnival In OGDC Seria

Sayang Brunei, History Carnival In OGDC Seria

Kuala Belait, Brunei Darussalam - Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Laila Diraja Dato Paduka Awang Haji Hazair bin Haji Abdullah yesterday morning officiated the three-day History Carnival in OGDC Seria.

The carnival is conducted by the History Centre in cooperation with the Belait District Office, Brunei Shell Petroleum Sdn Bhd and Belait residents.

The minister said the carnival serves to disseminate historical facts and widen the community's historical knowledge, observe and learn the nation's history which links the present to past.

He urged individuals who are in possession of the nation's historical artefacts, documents or materials to come forward and share them to the benefit of the nation and add to the historical archives of the centre.

"History is a record of the communities' life in the past and it is crucial as history is `historia est magistra vitae'," which contains various lessons and values as well as significant events, which could serve as a guideline, particularly in the process of planning, development and progress of the nation state.

"Therefore, the history of a nation state should be known, understood and observed by the communities so it would be known to its people. People who do not acknowledge or confront their nation's past history are those who have forgotten their roots and origin.

"To strengthen the spirit of state and nationalism, the Sultanate's past events should be disseminated so the younger generation can learn and appreciate the nation's glorious history as well as its downfall, (the) progress and . development experienced by people in the past, which led the nation to development and civilisation until we achieved independence and sovereignty today.

"The exploration, research and documenting results of Brunei's historical research should go on as history itself continues to develop based on findings during research," the minister said.

He advised the Brunei History Centre to continue seeking new approaches to disseminate historical facts and information in line with the community's needs and requirements.

He hoped that the History Carnival will be carried out on a continuous basis and will be extended to schools and villages throughout the nation.

The approach used for the carnival should also be creative, innovative and proactive to ensure that the information is passed on to the community.

The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, with the involvement of History Centre, will be organising a History Telling and Analysis Competition for youths and students in secondary schools and higher education institutions in the country.

Participants would not only recount historical events but also elaborate their importance and significance towards the development and the nation's strength based on the Sultanate's philosophy of Melayu Islam Beraja (MIB).

The theme for this year's History Carnival is Sayang Brunei' or Love Brunei.

The theme was created based on Brunei's historical journey which calls upon the citizens and residents in the country to love Brunei so it would remain as a sovereign MIB nation.

The minister said the exhibits would contain elements of affection towards the monarch, religion, race and country to overcome the world's current challenges.

Participation from communities in the district and private collection of artefacts and documents as well as exhibits from BSP will colour the carnival with the aim to provide information on Brunei's historical facts, culture and communities.

The exhibition also hopes to give an understanding on Brunei's history and its culture, and instil the spirit of patriotism and strengthen loyalty to the king, religion, nation state and country.

Programmes and activities lined up for the carnival are Belait native traditional dances, traditional games of Belait and Brunei natives and also a cultural evening.
