Celebrity Chefs Serve Gourmet Malay Meal for Charity

Singapore - A team of celebrity chefs prepared an unusual dinner on Sunday to mark the end of a two-day Malay food festival in Kampong Glam.

French-trained chef Amri Abdul Azim and Italian-trained chef Andri Jamil - both finalists of the reality television show Chef Selebriti - created a unique five-course gourmet Malay meal for a charity dinner at the closing ceremony of the festival.

Called Of Rendang Tales & Spices, the two-day event - which comprised talks, master classes and exhibitions - was organised by the Malay Heritage Foundation as part of this year's Singapore Food Festival.

Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts and Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs, was the guest of honor at the event.

Noting that food had the power to bring people together and transmit values and culture, he said he was heartened to see the Malay community sharing its culinary heritage with other Singaporeans.

The chefs were also guided by celebrity cook and former restaurateur Azizah Ali and helped by students from NorthLight School, Assumption Pathway School and the Institute of Technical Education College West.

Dr Yaacob said he hoped the experience would motivate the students to reconnect with the culinary heritage of their parents and grandparents while also learning from the chefs.

Among the dishes were marinated prawns in a coconut milk-based sauce; lamb shank cooked with cashew nuts, tomato sauce and mint leaves; and snapper served with a thick chilli gravy and toasted almonds.
