Love for Sultan in Painting Competition
Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam - Art is one of the creative fields that can be developed in creative industry, which can contribute to the promotion of culture and boost income.
This observation was made by Dato Paduka Hj Idris bin Hj Abas, in his speech as the chairperson of the painting competition during the prize presentation ceremony for the winners.
The event was organised in conjunction with His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam's 65th birthday celebrations.
Held at the BSB Waterfront, the guest of honour, Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Hj Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Hj Othman, Minister of Home Affairs, presented the prizes to the winners.
Also present were Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Hj Awang Halbi bin Hj Md Yussof, the Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, and other senior officials.
Dato Paduka Hj Idris said that as many as 114 paintings were received.
The winning paintings in Category A and B became pesambahs to His Majesty during the get-together event last week.
In Category A, Hj Abd Wahab bin Hj Mohd Jaafar won first place with His Majesty's portrait while Awang Suhaili bin Omar won second place, also with His Majesty's portrait, while Mohammad Faizal bin Hj Hamdan won third place for his `Doa Raja'.
Meanwhile, in Category B, Hj Abd Wahab bin Hj Mohd Jaafar was again adjudged as the winner with his painting, "His Majesty with the people during Maulud celebration".
HarliffNabillah bin Sayong grabbed second place with his painting "Nekad Murni 86" and Ali bin Hj Abd Rahim won third place with his painting Bercemar Duli'.
In an interview, Hj Abd Wahab bin Hj Mohd Jaafar, who won both categories, said, "I am honoured because this is the first time I've won both categories."
"I use my free time to draw both paintings. It took me about three to four weeks to complete the paintings.
My inspiration comes from pictures I see online." Hj Abd Wahab works in RTB.
When asked about his most preferred medium of using, oil paintings, he said, "With oil, I can easily make any adjustments."
He also said that it is hard to live solely on art in Brunei.
However, he praised the government's effort in promoting art among younger generation through various initiatives like introducing art related-programmes in UBD.
Awang Marsidi bin Omar took home the winner's prize in Category C with his painting entitled "Khazanah Alam" followed by Abd Ajihis bin Hj Terawih in second place with his painting "Khazanah Yang Hilang" and Awang Suhaili bin Omar in third place with his painting "Simbol Keperibadian Negara".
The winner in Category D was Ani Raihana binti Osman with her painting "Padian", while Lizzan Linggat grabbed second place with the drawing of Sultan Omar 'Ali Saiffuddien Mosque.
The third place went to Nur Annissa Hikmatul binti Idris for her painting entitled "Kehidupan Alam Di Negara Ku".
Nur Syuhaidah binti Suhaili won first place in Category E with her painting of Sultan Omar 'Ali Saiffuddien Mosque followed by Noorashik binti Salim in second place with "Khazanah Lama dari Kenangan Silam". The third place went to Dk Syazwina binti Pg Md Roslan for her painting of "Melayu Brunei".
Fifteen-year-old Nur Syuhaidah binti Suhaili said in an interview, "This is my first competition and I won. I am really happy."
