Glamour for the blushing bride

Kuala Lumpur - LOCAL designer Syaiful Baharim gave a touch of modernity to traditional Malay wedding dresses in his latest Maharani collection. 

Keeping his collection modern and simple, he used colours and embellishments to evoke that sense of grandeur associated with the Maharanis (Indian princesses) of old.  

Many of the baju kurung and kebaya had intricate beadwork that would surely add glamour to that special day for blushing brides. 

One particular green kebaya, sported beadwork that resembled a kerongsang (a brooch typically worn with a Nyonya baju kebaya) while on a brown baju kurung was sewn what resembled a long necklace with Swarovski crystals. 

“Instead of having to put on a brooch or a necklace, you already have it there so you don‘t have to fuss over all the accessories,” said Syaiful, who has a boutique in Plaza Damas, Sri Hartamas. 

He constantly reinvents the baju kurung so that it keeps up with the trend. 

“At the same time, I still keep to the kurung silhouette so people get the traditional thing with modern fusion in it,” he said. 

For the more daring and adventurous, there was even an off-shoulder modern baju kurung made of Terengganu woven songket. 

He sources some of his materials from Terengganu, Pakistan and India. 

“I don‘t limit myself when it comes to materials because the more you experiment with materials, the further your creativity can go,” said Syaiful.  

His collection was paraded for guests who attended a special high tea at Dynasty Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. 

The Tang Palace Chinese restaurant was romantically decorated in a wedding setting so that couples planning their wedding could get a taste of the wedding packages available at the hotel.
