Brunei Needs More Local Scientists

Bandar Seri Begawan - The need for more local scientists is fast becoming more prevalent as there is a shortage of talented individuals at the moment, said Daphne Lai Teck Ching, Computer Science lecturer at the Universiti Brunei Darussalam yesterday during the closing of the Bruneiandroid Codefest workshop organised by the Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry (AiTi) Brunei Darussalam.

"Information Communication Technology (ICT) is an important tool that can be used in learning science," said Daphne, who was declared the most active and innovative participant.

In addition, participating in the workshop has given her the opportunity to work with other likeminded people and pool their resources together to create a worthwhile endeavour. During the workshop her group was able to create a concept design of the location of the qiblat and prayer time guide by utilising the library within the Android operating system.

Participants had also received certificates presented by Pengiran Hj Mohd Salleh Pengiran Hj Aji, the AiTi`s Deputy Chief Executive.

Yesterday`s workshop included a session on knowledge sharing and giving participants the opportunity to present what they had learned throughout the past two weeks, share their experiences and promote their finished products.

The Android technology was developed by Google. The participants during this workshop came from a variety of groups from the private and public sector.

Smart phones will be utilising the Android operating system with their production expected to start from this year. Recently, prototypes of such phones were shown in Barcelona at the 3GSM Mobile World Congress. The OS is supported by the Open Handset Alliance, a multinational alliance of 34 countries which includes industry giants such as Intel, Samsung, Motorola, HTC, LG and Google.
