Mastera aims to elevate status, quality of Malay literature

Bandar Seri Begawan - The 14th Conference of Literature Council of Southeast Asia (Mastera) held an adjournment and its final session yesterday morning at the Rizqun International Hotel in Gadong after a three-day deliberation to lift the Malay literature to a higher level and status.

Chaired by Dr Mataim bin Bakar, the Director of Language and Literature Bureau (DBP) and the chairman of Mastera Brunei Darussalam, heads of missions from member nations of Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia and Indonesia inked the resolutions at the final session.

Delegates from Singapore attended the event as the observers.

The resolutions were meant to elevate the status and quality of Malay literature to world standard by carrying out various programmes and activities such as literature comparison lectures at member countries.

The council also agreed for Mastera Indonesia to continue organising literature writing programmes.

The next Mastera secretariat meeting will take place in March 2009 while the 15th Conference of Mastera will be held in October 2009 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Mastera was formed in 1995 to elevate the Malay language literature to a level of international standard. By Rosli Abidin Yahya
