100,000 to take part in protest against the use of English in the teaching of Science and Mathematics
Kuala Lumpur - The Sekretariat Selamatkan Bahasa Melayu (Save Bahasa Melayu Secretariat) will organise a gathering of 100,000 people to protest against the use of English in the teaching of Science and Mathematics.
Head of the secretariat`s implementation committee, Hasni Abas, said yesterday that it would submit a memorandum against the move to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
"We had a meeting last Tuesday with non-governmental organisations and political bodies to discuss this matter."
He said among those who attended the meeting included representatives from Pas Youth, Muslim Youth Movement of Malay-sia (Abim), Bahasa Melayu Students Association of Universiti Malaya and Malaysian Linguistic Association.
The secretariat has two units: the main body and the implementation committee.
Members of the main body include Malay linguists Datuk Dr Hassan Ahmad, Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Abdul Rahman, Tun Abdul Rahman Yaakob, Datuk Aziz Deraman, Tan Sri Prof Emeritus Ismail Hussein and Prof Dr Awang Sariyan.
