New Malay Literary Award
Masuri Salikun
Singapore - A New Malay literary award for promising individuals was announced on Thursday by the Malay Language Council.
Called the Anugerah Harapan, the award aims to encourage people under the age of 40 who are actively involved in promoting Malay literature here. The winner receives a $3,000 prize.
Nominees should be those who are working towards the development of Malay literature in schools, the community or in the country.
This is a new addition to the biennial Malay Literary Award, established in 1993. It presents 23 prizes to winners in six categories, including novels, poems and drama scripts.
This year‘s ceremony will be held in November, when the Tun Seri Lanang award - the most prestigious in the local Malay literary scene - will be given to someone who made significant contributions to Malay literature.
Seven individuals so far have received it, including the late poet and literary critic Masuri Salikun and poet Djamal Tukimin, 62.
Until April 30, the public can nominate individuals through the website www.anugerahpersuratan2009.com, where more details about the award can be found. Adeline Chia
