Traditional Music Pointers For Sabah Music Education

Kota Kinabalu - The results of the Traditional Sabah Music Instruments Seminar (Perkusi) 2009 that ended today should be published as a book to be used as reference for the teaching of music in Sabah, said State Minister for Tourism, Culture and the Environment, Datuk Masidi Manjun.

He said among entries in the book would be old terminology used for the playing of traditional musical instruments based on ethnic Sabahan dialects.

"Now, that terminology is only known and understood by respective ethnic Sabah tribes. This makes it difficult for the government to prepare a Sabah traditional music education syllabus.

"When there are terms that can be used generally, this will make it easy for all," he said in his speech to close the seminar here today.

His speech was read out by his aide, Datuk Ellron Alfred Angin.

A total of 45 participants from tribes, institutes of higher education, state agencies and departments and non-governmental organisations took part.
