PPBMM Urges Return of Malay Language Dignity
Besut, Malaysia – The Malaysian Malay Language Education Association (PPBMM) has urged the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Higher Education and all quarters involved in education to restore the dignity and sovereignty of the Malay language urgently without any excuses.
Association president, Associate Professor Dr Hashim Othman, said in line with that desire a resolution was passed by the association‘s executive committee that met on March 13.
"We ask all involved to restore the sovereignty of the Malay language through three aspects which are teaching and learning; the forming of terminology, publications and translations; and Malay language culture," he said in a statement faxed to Bernama here, Sunday.
He said through the teaching and learning aspect, the role of the Malay language as a medium of instruction for all subjects in schools and public institutes of higher education could be returned to as it was in 2003.
PPBMM also all urged that all science and arts students be encouraged to take the Malay Literature subject as an elective subject to install aesthetics, the reading interest and proficiency in the Malay language.
In the efforts of language building, uniformity, terminology and translation the role of Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka and the National Translation Institute should be actively revived.
Besides that the publication of books and international journals on science and technology should be actively undertaken through cooperation with Malay speaking countries in the region.
He said the resolution had been faxed to the Education Minister Datuk Seri Hishamudin Tun Hussein, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Noordin, Foreign Minister and also PPBMM patron Dato Seri Utama Dr Rais Yatim and the Federation of National Writers Associations of Malaysia (Gapena).Bernama
