Syed Mokhtar Awarded Tokoh Melayu Terbilang

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - Renowned entrepreneur Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar Albukhary was awarded the Tokoh Melayu Terbilang award at Umno‘s 63rd anniversary celebration last night for his contributions to Malaysian business and society.

He received the award from party president Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

Syed Mokhtar is currently the richest bumiputra corporate figure in Malaysia, who is involved in transportation and logistics, port operations, plantations, property development, defence and armoury as well as engineering and power generation.

He heads the Yayasan Albukhary Foundation which is responsible for the Albukhary Hospital and Dialysis Centre, Albukhary Orphanage and Senior Citizens Care Centre.

Special honour: Najib presenting the Tokoh Melayu Terbilang award to Syed Mokhtar (centre) at the PWTC last night. With them is Deputy Prime Minister and Umno deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

Under the foundation, Syed Mokhtar also spearheaded Universiti Antarabangsa Albukhary, with the first intake expected in 2010.

He also built and launched the National Islamic Arts Musuem, the largest in South-East Asia.

Syed Mokhtar, 58, is also involved in major Malaysian companies such as the Malaysian Mining Corporation and DRB-Hicom Bhd.
