New Malay Literature Curriculum
Putrajaya, Malaysa - A new Malay literature curriculum will be introduced in secondary schools and literature component programmes will be included in the teaching of Bahasa Malaysia.
Wearing his hat of education minister, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the programmes, which will start next year, would be reviewed from time to time to ensure they were enhancing literary performance and achievements through the national education system.
He also said the ministry plans to coordinate literature studies in schools with those at the universities "to ensure the teaching of literature in schools remains relevant to the aspiration to build a nation that is not only progressive, but united and peaceful".
After meeting national literary figures and launching a compilation of literature books yesterday, Muhyiddin said the ministry would establish and manage a RM27 million "book city" in Kuala Lumpur to enable publishers, producers, editors and writers to operate under one roof.
