Two Ministries Jointly Promoting Traditional Malay Songs

Kuala Lumpur- The Information Ministry and Culture, Arts and Heritage Ministry are working together to promote traditional Malay songs through the Bintang Asli Remaja Kebangsaan 2007 competition.

This Young Malaysians Traditional Malay Song Singing Competition 2007, is aimed at preserving and promoting interest in this genre of songs and music, especially among the younger generation.

"The final round of the competition this Saturday is made more meaningful through the cooperation of the two ministries," said National Culture and Arts Department director-general Datuk Norliza Rofli at a press conference here today.

She said 12 contestants (six males and six females) aged between 15 and 25 would vie for the prizes in the competition final where they would have to sing an "asli" song and another inang, joget or zapin number.

The winners in the male and female categories will each go home with RM15,000, a certificate, trophy and vocal training offer, while the first runners-up will each receive RM10,000 and second runners-up RM8,000.

The competition will be telecast live over RTM1 this Saturday at 8.30pm.
