Nationwide Library Network Must To Boost Reading Habit

Tutong, Brunei Darussalam - Reading should not only be restricted on school textbooks or magazines, but should also focus on Al-Quran and the study of religious knowledge, as well as other various resources in order to gain vast knowledge.

The Language and Literature Bureau`s acting director, Hjh Aminah Hj Momin was speaking during the Fostering Reading Culture Campaign held at the Seri Kenangan Hall in Tutong.

The campaign is one of the several activities arranged by the bureau to celebrate the Enhancing Reading Culture 2009 and the importance of Malay language as the official language in the country.

According to Hjh Aminah, the Enhancing Reading Culture 2009 project is to replace the bureau`s Reading Month which has been conducted since 2002.

“The campaign held today is to encourage the community to foster and instil their passion in reading, in line with the titah of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam during the 25th National Day to achieve the nation`s goal for the Wawasan 2035,” she said in her welcoming remarks.

“Reading is important in the development of a civilised nation. A nation would develop faster if they have mastered vast knowledge in various fields and this could be achieved through reading.”

She added that “Other means to boost reading habits among the population is the creation of several libraries nationwide under the National Development Plan, which includes community libraries”.

The event started with a tausyeh performance by the Ghayatul Maram Tausyeh group from Kuala Belait.

The highlight of the event was a special lecture by the guest of honour, Permanent Secretary at the Prime Minister`s Office, Hj Abdul Aziz Orang Kaya Maharaja Lela Hj Mohd Yussof, titled “Reading as the Heart of a Successful Nation”.

In his lecture, Hj Abdul Aziz stressed the importance of knowledge in the Islamic perspective. He pointed out that true knowledge was eternal, and one must not only obtain knowledge on everyday life, but also knowledge on the Hereafter.

An Islamic poetry reading was performed by Mansur Hj Khamis, winner of the recent Islamic Poetry Reading Competition as part of yesterday`s event.

The guest of honour also toured several booths displaying local books which are on sale at the Seri Kenangan Hall.

The books were supplied by the Museums Department, the Language and Literature Bureau, the History Centre, Postal Service Department and the Islamic Da`wah Centre.

Also present during the event was the Penghulu of Kg Keriam, Orang Kaya Jaya Putra Dato Paduka Hj Mohd Taha Rauf and Legislative Council member Orang Kaya Maha Wijaya Hj Othman Uking.
