Preserving Malaysia`s Songket Heritage

Preserving Malaysia`s Songket Heritage

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - A Songket Ball with a specially staged musical performance by Stephen Rahman Hughes, M. Nasir and Ida Mariana will be held to keep songket at the forefront as Malaysia‘s heritage treasure.

With the theme “Keeping Heritage Alive”, guests to the event on July 10 at The Shangri-La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur will be treated to a night of songs, traditional dance and musical instruments at the place to be seen with the “Who‘s Who” list that ranges from corporate CEOs to celebrities and the Kuala Lumpur‘s “in-crowd”.

Under the Royal Patronage of the Queen, Seri Paduka Baginda Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Nur Zahirah, the Songket Ball will be an unforgettable evening, with a never before seen show that “marries the traditional with the new”.

“The Songket Ball guests will be able see, feel, touch and taste heritage woven into songket,” said Datuk Larry Gan, the Songket Ball organising chairman. “Guests will also discover songket in a different light as the evening unfolds with a special musical performance directed by award-winning theatre director Datuk Zahim Albakri with Man Bai as the musical director,” he added. “The Foundation is also grateful to the performers, producers and corporate sponsors for coming together to make this a successful event,” said Gan.

The royal couple Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin and Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Nur Zahirah will grace the event.

The Songket Ball is an evening event for corporations, organisations and individuals to support YTNZ‘s aim of preserving and enhancing indigenous Malaysian craft and heritage while helping to improve the livelihoods of artisans, weavers and craftsmen in Malaysia. Its pioneer project focuses on sustaining and growing the songket industry through the introduction of innovative uses and applications of songket.

The Songket Ball will also showcase outfits using light-weight contemporary songket produced by the Foundation‘s weavers and designed by top fashion designers like Tom Abang Saufi, Radzuan Radziwill, Melinda Looi, Jovian Mandagie, Rizalman Ibrahim, Tangoo and Pink Jambu.

“This is an excellent opportunity for sponsors, partners, industry insiders and individuals to enjoy a classy evening,” added Gan.

Tables and single seats are available by calling 03-2284 8253. All proceeds will be used to support the fair employment of the Foundation‘s weavers in Terengganu and Sarawak and other initiatives to promote and preserve the Malaysian heritage of songket.
