MABBIM Lecture Explores Scientific Element In Language

Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam - The existence of the Language and Literature Bureau and the Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia Language Council (Majlis Bahasa Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia, MABBIM) is centred on the effort to inculcate awareness to society on the importance of supporting and determining the direction of a nation and its language.

It is the unity of three qualities durability, belief and passion that serves as the lifeblood of the aspirations of both the LLB and MABBIM. The working plan on every effort to overcome the problems should involve an approach characterised by proactiveness, the spirit of contribution and the ability to advance rapidly.

This was stated yesterday in a MABBIM lecture entitled “The Scientific Element in Malay Societal Thinking: A Corpus Study” (Unsur Saintifik dalam Pemikiran Masyarakat Melayu: Satu Kajian Korpus) presented by Prof Dr Nor Hashimah binti Jalaludin, Professor in Linguistics at the Language and Linguistics Research Centre, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.

The lecture was held at the Balai Sarmayuda, Language and Literature Bureau in the capital.

“Linguistics is the knowledge that scientific research on language has been used as one of the core Social Sciences. As it has been given the scientific character, it will be more fascinating if that `science` is explored in-depth so the difference between fact and illusion can be understood,” said Prof Dr Nor Hashimah in her lecture.

“The ability of our brain to accumulate and relay the information on language is remarkable. There is the existence of short- and long-term memory to assist us to accumulate information.

“With the advancement in technology, the abstract corpus mind is able to execute tasks in a fashion similar to that of a computer data corpus. All the relevant documents are digitalised and utilised according to specific needs in a scientific way,” said the linguistics professor.

“The corpus is later translated into valuable data to support in clarifying the language phenomena,” she added. “The corpus is also able to support us in rectifying hidden messages.”

The event was officiated by Hjh Aminah binti Hj Momin, Acting Director of the Language and Literature Bureau. Also present were Dr Mataim bin Bakar, Acting Director of Research, Development and International Affairs, MABBIM members and senior officers at the bureau. Rohani Hj Abd Hamid
