National Islamic Treasury Can Become A Reality Soon: Jamil Khir

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - The setting up of a national Baitumal (Islamic treasury), mooted by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, can become a reality soon following the adoption of a resolution for the proposal to be brought up at the ministerial level for careful study.

The resolution was adopted by 350 participants attending the National Baitulmal Convention here.

They comprised religious figures, academicians, researchers and representatives of non-governmental organisations and were of the opinion the Baitulmal institution would be further strengthened with the setting up of the national Baitulmal.

Minister in the Prime Minister`s Department Mejar Jeneral (B) Datuk Jamil Khir Baharom said the proposal, however, needed to be studied carefully first as presently Baitulmal matters were under the purview of each state.

“This is to ensure the national Baitulmal does not become a competitor to those in the states,” he told reporters after closing the convention here Thursday.

He added that the Prime Minister`s Department would handle the in-depth study on the proposed national Baitulmal.
