Miri, Malaysia - The survival of the Malays in Sarawak will depend on the successful creation of a new generation which are able to contribute to the country`s development, Planning and Resource Management Minister II Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said.

The new generation of Malays should therefore be equipped with skills and knowledge that would enable them to compete in the international arena and at the same time cooperate with other races in the country, he said.

“For the Malays to move forward and contribute to the nation`s development, and not merely sideliners and spectators, it is important for them to continue enhancing their abilities and skills,” he said.

He was speaking at the Miri Malay Association`s 50th anniversary celebration here Saturday night, representing Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.

Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Abang Mohamad Salahuddin was the guest of honour at the event which was also attended by State Legislative Assembly Speaker Datuk Seri Mohd Asfia Awang Nassar and several cabinet ministers.

Awang Tengah said the association`s half-a-century experience could become a foundation for the Malays to break out of their comfort zones to achieve greater heights of success in the future.

He also said that the association had successfully played its roles in uniting the Malays and in working together with other communities to bring development to Miri, turning what used to be small town into a city.

The association also contributed to Sarawak`s political stability which enabled the government to concentrate on implementing development programmes for the people, he said.

At the event, Awang Tengah also launched a book, titled “Kronologi Perjuangan Bangsa Melayu Miri 1959-2009”, which chronicles the struggles of the Malays in Miri in the past 50 years.
