The 2nd Perhelatan Agung and Adat Title Awarding Ceremony of Serdang Sultanate

The 2nd Perhelatan Agung and Adat Title Awarding Ceremony of Serdang Sultanate

Medan, MelayuOnline.com - Looking back at the past history to run the present day and upholding the present day‘s wisdom to build a better future are so much important. The history is the torch enlightening people on how to form a better life and a glorious civilization. People should now take the lesson from the past mistakes. People must also appreciate and take respect to those who have contributed greatly in the history, thus the present people can now take advantages from them.

The above opinion might properly represent the thought of Tuanku Luckman Sinar Basarshah II, SH., the ruling Sultan of the Sultanate of Serdang. The above insight came out as he was delivering a speech at the Perhelatan Agung II of the Sultanate of Serdang that was held in the Convention Hall of Tiara Hotel, Medan, North Sumatra, on Monday (27/7/2009). Amongst the presents attending the event were Syamsul Arifin – North Sumatra‘s Governor, representatives of mass organizations from the entire Sumatra, the royal family of the Sultanate of Serdang, and Mahyudin Al Mudra – the head of the Center for Research and Development of Malay Culture (BKPBM).

Throughout its history, the Sultanate of Serdang has contributed greatly both to the Serdang society and Indonesia. For more than 300 years, since its first establishment, the Sultanate of Serdang has empowered the Serdang people in the fields of agriculture, education, tourism, and of course culture. In like manner, the Sultanate of Serdang enormously contributed to the Republic of Indonesia. The Sultanate had once sent a telegram to the first President of Indonesia, Ir. Soekarno, on December 1945. Through the telegram, the Sultan of Serdang told the president that the Sultanate of Serdang will always be part of the Republic of Indonesia. In this point, the Sultanate plays its role in the unity of the Republic of Indonesia.

Regarding to Indonesia‘s unity, the Sultanate of Serdang, on the same occasion, honoured the adat titles of the Sultanate of Serdang to some outstanding figures. Syamsul Arifin, the governor of North Sumatra Province, expressed his appreciation of such an adat title awarding ceremony. “The adat title bestowal is the right way to maintain the unity of Indonesia. This is considered effective enough to prevent the Indonesians from separatism and radicalism,” he said.

The governor also suggested that the adat titles‘ receivers should now and then work hard to preserve and develop the national identity, in this case the Malay identity. “Such an adat title awarding ceremony ought not to see as an effort to revive feudalism. This is an effort to revitalize the local wisdom of our cultural identity, the Malay identity,” Syamsul‘s remarks.

The Sultan alone views the adat title awarding as an appreciation to those who have contributed to the Malay and society. The adat title awarding is also an effort to share responsibilities between the Sultanate of Serdang and the chosen people. “I do personally expect that those who were bestowed with the adat title would be more encouraged to develop and strengthen the Malay culture and identity,” the Sultan remarked.

Mahyudin Al Mudra, the head of BKPBM and the director of MelayuOnline.com, is one of those who were entitled for the adat titles of the Sultanate of Serdang. The Adat titled “Datuk Cendikia Himatullah was bestowed upon Mahyudin by the Sultanate of Serdang. The adat title was given upon the hard works of Mahyudin Al Mudra in the preservation and development of Malay culture through the information technology; that of through MelayuOnline.com, MalayTourism.com, RajaAliHaji.com, and CeritaRakyatNusantara.com. Mahyudin was regarded to have been successfully preserved, developed and introduced Malay culture to the world.
