Syed Hussein Alatas` Philosophy On Graft Still Relevant

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - The late Prof Datuk Dr Syed Hussein Alatas‘ philosophy on graft is very much relevant till this day for it covers a wide aspect of social behaviour in Asia, particularly Malaysia, said Prof Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Embong from the Institute of Malaysian and International Studies (IKMAS).

He said the research by the late professor should be adopted to provide solutions in curbing corruption and not merely used as a source for reference.

“Dr Syed Hussein Alatas‘ theory says corruption can be curbed by looking at the role of a leader, his integrity and his political commitment, which are very relevant in solving the menace in Malaysia now,” he said.

Dr Abdul Rahman attributed this in his paper, “Integrity and Corruption: A Review on Syed Hussein Alatas, His Philosophy and Its Relevance Today” which he presented at the “International Legacy on the Philosophy of Syed Hussein” seminar organized by Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP), here Tuesday.

Abdul Rahman added, Dr Syed Hussein focused on the importance of resurrecting public trust, encouraging them to fight, expose and curb corruption.

“His systematic works on theories and methodologies proved to be appropriate and precise in their analysis, covering the characteristics of bribery and how to curb them,” said Abdul Rahman.

IKMAS is a centre for social sciences within Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM).

Meanwhile, DBP director-general Datuk Termuzi Abdul Aziz said the seminar provided an avenue for international and local scholars to apply and sharpen their critical thinking.
