Students Urged To Uphold MIS Values

Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam - It is essential that students have a sense of patriotism for religion, the Sultan and the country, in order to produce quality human resources in Brunei, said the director of Information Department yesterday.

This is the educational policy the Sultanate intends to achieve so that the survival of the Melayu Islam Beraja (MIB) or Malay Islamic Monarchy administration in Brunei would stay afloat, said Dr Hj Muhammad Hadi Muhammad Melayong during the closing of the Bruneian Overseas Undergraduates Civic Course.

He said: “We hope that scholars who participated in this civic programme can benefit and apply knowledge gained to become a weapon as well as a shield in facing challenges, trials and tribulations whilst studying abroad.”

He said that students going abroad to study will be future assets of the country and should continue the progress and development of Brunei-Malay in the 21st century.

Deputy Education Minister Pg Dato Seri Setia Dr Hj Mohammad Pg Hj Abd Rahman said that he felt the civic programme was a “golden opportunity” for the organisers and the scholarship recipients to provide and receive accurate information about the government and the country.

“Obtaining accurate information in terms of economy, religion, politics, education, development, ceremonial customs, culture and social aspects will help you (scholars) be unofficial ambassadors for Brunei when you are abroad,” he said.

The deputy minister advised the students to be equipped with knowledge of the aforementioned aspects of Brunei before going abroad for studies, apart from learning at their respective universities.

“As an intellectual which will become Brunei`s asset, you should not only be smart by revising subjects in universities where you learn, but must also have vast and deep knowledge of your own country,” he told the scholars.

He went on to say that if the time allocated for the civic programme was not long enough, it is the students` responsibility to find more reference sources to complete their knowledge on characteristics and practices of the nation, culture and religion.

He added: “His Majesty envisions to produce a future generation that is knowledgeable in various fields and who possess a sense of local identity.”

Pg Dato Seri Setia Dr Hj Mohammad presented certificates to the scholars during the closing ceremony. About 80 undergraduates completed the four-day course.
