Prominent Writer Passes Away

Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam - The literary circle of Brunei lost another writer, Pg Hj Sabtu bin Pg Hj Mohd Salleh, who succumbed to various illnesses just before Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

Better known as AS Isma, he received the coveted Southeast Asia (SEA) Write Award from Thailand royalty in Bangkok, Thailand in 1996. He was the nation`s 11th recipient.

Even though his literary genre was mainly poetry, he also wrote short stories and essays.

The writer was born in Kg Pekan Lama, Kg Ayer, in Bandar Seri Begawan on Dec 9, 1941.

He attended Sekolah Melayu Muhammad Jamalul Alam (SMJA) from 1953 to 1959.

Shortly after leaving school, he joined the teaching profession as trainee teacher where he taught in various primary and secondary schools.

From 1961 to 1963 he underwent teaching course at Maktab Perguruan Melayu Brunei (MPMB).

In 1966, he once again attended a one-year course in language and literature at Universiti Malaya, Kuala Lumpur.

AS Isma began writing in 1960 when his first short story “Kenang-Kenangan Hidup” was published in Tunas Belia, a publication of MPMB.

The writer has written nearly 200 poems. His first poem “Desa Anak Derhaka” was published in Utusan Zaman in 1960.

Apart from Utusan Zaman, his poems were also published in Mingguan Malaysia, Berita Minggu, Majalah Guru, Angkatan Baru, Penulis, Gema Dunia, Mutiara, Dewan Bahasa, Dewan Masyarakat, Dewan Sastera, Mastika, Bahana, Karya dan Bintang Harian.

He collected his poems in various anthologies, individually and in cooperation with other poets.

Aside from writing, AS Isma was also active in the Brunei Literary Writers Association (ASTERAWANI).
