Culture-Rich Adau Gayoh Celebration In Tutong

Tutong, Brunei Darussalam - Right after the harvesting of paddy, Acting Tutong District Officer, Awg Hj Mohd Suffian Hj B ungsu officiated the Dusun community's Adau Gayoh celebration yesterday in Tutong.

The celebration was held at Batu Mapan Waterfall of Kg Padnunok and organised by the residents of the village.

The celebration marked the gesture of gratefulness towards the good paddy production with the hope the production will increase more in the future.

Paddy planting activities serve as one of the sources of income that could contribute to the nation's economy and is one of the activities encouraged by the government to meet the local needs apart from lessening the dependency on imported rice.

In his speech, the Acting Tutong District Officer said, "Traditions and cultures need to be practised in the community's daily life despite the rapid development as it has immense values that need to be inherited by the younger generations."

He added, "The Dusun community is rich with culture and tradition which can attract tourists such as its wedding culture and other celebrations, as well as strengthen ties and establish a stronger and dynamic community."

The Acting District Officer also touched on the Batu Mapan Waterfall, which apart from being a recreational area filled with flora and fauna, is also hoped to contribute towards ecotourism in the country.

He also called on members of the Mukim and village council with the cooperation of the villagers to promote and introduce recreational areas or places of attraction in their village and ensure cleanliness at all times.

Yesterday's celebration, amongst others saw a showcase of cultural performances and presentation of donations to senior citizens at the village.-- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
