BKPBM Hosts Panel Discussion and Awards LKTI Winners

Yogyakarta, MelayuOnline.com– Following the announcement of the winner of the Lomba Karya Tulis Ilmih Tingkat Nasional-LKTI (National Academic Writing Competition) on March 4th, 2008, Balai Kajian dan Pengemebangan Budaya Melayu-BKPBM (Center for Research and Development of Malay Culture) hosted panel discussion on Monday afternoon (24/03/08), at 3-6 p.m. The program was to appreciate the winners of LKTI who participated in the national competition. Among the presents were Prof. Dr. Sjafri Sairin, M.A. (MelayuOnline.com consultant-Professor of Anthropology Gadjah Mada University), Ir. Said Fadillah, some Malay figures and scholars of Universities in Yogyakarta.

The Head of BKPBM who is also the Director of MelayuOnline.com Mahyudin Al Mudra, S.H., M.M. opened the discussion, explaining the reason for conducting such competition and choosing the theme “The Political View of the Malayans” among other available themes.

Firstly, Mahyudin argued that it was the writing tradition that propelled the Malay culture emerged and flourished in the Nusantara (Malay Archipelago). Secondly, the widespread misuse of politic for personal interest and the ignorance of ethic while exercising the power and authority. Further, he said that the Malay culture provides much value and wisdom for the references in the political realm. Hence, through the LKTI, the compiled papers are expected to take part in impelling the creation of positive and conducive politic in Indonesia.

The discussion, moderated by Hatib Abdul-Kadir, S.Ant., was divided into two sessions, presentation of working papers by the winners and followed by the questions raised by the audiences. Imam Mustofa, S.H.I. (The third winner) took the first chance to elaborate the ideas of his study on “Meneladani Etika Politik Melayu” (Setting the Political Ethics of the Malay Culture as an Example). He explained that the thoughts of Raja Ali Haji are still applicable to the recent political system of Indonesia government

The second winner Ary Budianto, M.A., presented his working paper under title “Menyoal Arah Politik Kebudayaan Melayu: Pertelingkahan Politik Kebudayaan Islam dan Melayu di Nusantara” (Questioning the Political Course of Malay:  The Clash between Politic of Islamic Civilization and Malay in the Nusantara). As he explained, Budianto attempted to observe closely the contiguity between Islam and the Malay culture in two countries, Indonesia and Malaysia. He contended that Malaysia made Islam as the official religion in the country, making it as a firm political identity. While in Indonesia, as the case is different, he argued that Islam is only as cultural identity.

The last presentation was brought by Endy Saputro, M.A (The first winner) who talked about the concept of Malay within two powerful words, kami and kita (both literally mean “we”). He said that both words symbolize the cosmologic meaning of a nation. Muhhamad Endy further argued that the word “kita”, having primordial meaning, are absolutely different from its counterpart “kami”, which tend to be more multicultural. The words are not interchangeable and have their paradigm. Thus, the word “kami” represents the ethnic paradigm way of thinking, as shown in the Malay. While the word “kita” reflects the flexible attitude toward the diverse culture such as in Indonesia.

The panel discussion was closed by awarding the winners. The first winner was awarded with the Riau Governor‘s trophy, certificate, and 10 millions rupiahs. The award was presented by Mahyudin who represented Riau Governor. The second winner were given the trophy of Head of Riau DPRD (House of Representative), certificate and 5 millions rupiahs. It was presented by Prof. Dr. Sjafri Sjairin, M.A. The third winner got 4 millions, the BKPBM‘s trophy, and certificate, presented by Ir. Said Fadillah.
