English Course, Follow-up to Co-operative network with Wisma Bahasa

English Course, Follow-up to Co-operative network with Wisma Bahasa

Yogyakarta, MelayuOnline.com- Malay music played lightly seemed to warm the atmosphere around the meeting hall of Balai Pinang Lima, the office building of the Center for Research and Development of Malay Culture (BKPBM), after hours of rain on Saturday (01/11). All of sudden, a young girl came in and introduced herself to all BKPBM‘s crews at the hall. It seemed so strange; she spoke English fluently, totally differs from BKPBM‘s crews who much prefer Malay or Javanese to English for daily conversation.

You‘re wrong if you think she is a foreigner coming to BKPBM‘s office for research purposes. That young girl is Niken Wijaya, an English tutor who is assigned to offer English course to all BKPBM‘s crews for six months ahead. She is also a representative of Wisma Bahasa, an institution concerning on giving Indonesian language course for foreigners coming to Indonesia, especially in Yogyakarta.

Miss Niken started the course by asking the names of all BKPBM‘s crews. One by one BKPBM‘s crews introduced themselves to the tutor in English. With a small laugh hearing the crews‘ English, she tried to motivate, “It is impossible to speak English fluently without a lot of practice.” Then, she brought the class to a game section in which all participants should demonstrate their English skills, especially in conversation.

This 90-minutes English course was the beginning of follow-up programme to the co-operative network between BKPBM and Wisma Bahasa. Several days ago, on October 31st, BKPBM has decorated a classroom of Wisma Bahasa‘s office with Malay properties such as photographs, Tepak Sirih, Krisses, and Malay books.

At the end of the course, Hadi Kurniawan, BKPBM‘s Daily Executive said, “There‘s no denying that English plays important roles in science, technology, tourism, business, and many other aspects. That‘s why; BKPBM crews must be capable of possessing this language skill for developing the academic aspects in BKPBM.”
