Malay Literature

Disease and its Obat Ramuan (Traditional Medicines)

1. Rheumatic

To heal this disease, the traditional Malays usually use medicinal plants below:

  1. tanjung flower leaf
  2. meransi leaf   
  3. rambutan leaf
  4. cikorau leaf

Direction to make ramuan (traditional medicine) and to use

The four leaves are mixed in the boiling water in a big pan. After reaching the highest degree of heat, the pan is put nearby a sick man whose body is covered fully with blanket. The pan is then opened to give warm vapor to the sick person for about half hour until his sweat blows. The same way is repeated for three days. The shaman usually reads some mantras to make the medicine more powerful.

2. Abscess

The medicinal plans needed for healing this disease are:

  1. sitawar and sidingin leaf
  2. shoot of turmeric
  3. larutan grass

Direction to make ramuan and to use

All ingredients above are pressed to be powder, and then smeared around the abscess. The same way is repeated for several days.

3. Ulcer

This disease is healed with the fruit of candlenut tree. The fruit is burned to take its seed. The seed is rubbed repeatedly on a glass to take its oil. And the oil is later smeared around the ulcer.

4. Cacingan (One who Suffers from Intestinal Worms)

To heal this disease, one needs the following medicinal plants:

  1. old coconut
  2. shallot
  3. limau sundai (type of big lemon used to flavor dish)

Direction to make ramuan and to use

Coconut milk, sliced shallot, and the extract of limau sundai are mixed and then drunk. The same way is repeated for three days.

5. Panau (Skin Disease Accompanied by White Spots or Patches)

The ingredients needed for healing this disease are:

  1. gelinggang laut
  2. ginger
  3. kerosene

Direction to make ramuan and to use

  1. In bathing, the gelinggang laut is smeared around the panau until a reddish color appears on the skin. The same way is repeated for three days.
  2. Later, the ginger is pressed to become powder and mixed with the kerosene. This ramuan is then smeared around the panau after bathing.

6. Ringworm

To heal this contagious skin disease, one only needs to pound the leaf of kayu racun, and mixes it with kapur sirih. After bathing, the ramuan is then smeared around the ringworm.

7. Stomachache

The medicinal plants needed to heal this disease are:

  1. garlic
  2. ginger
  3. warm water

Direction to make ramuan and to use

Both garlic and ginger are pounded to be powder and mixed with the warm water. The ramuan is then drunk. The same way is repeated for several times.

8. Scrape

In Malay traditional medical care, there are two ways to heal scrape

  1. The leaf of sungkai is chewed smoothly, and then put on the scrape.
  2. Black dust of burning earthenware cooking pot is taken and put on the scrape

9. Sick eye

The sick eye is usually healed by sirih leaves. Just take five sirih leaves, wash cleanly and put on the clean water in a plate. The eye is then washed on the plate to get both dust and germ out from it.

10. Allergy

Malay traditional medical care uses an eggplant to heal allergy. The eggplant is cut and then smeared on the skin irritation or allergy.  

11. Sick Tooth

The Malays have to kinds of traditional medical care to heal sick tooth:

  1. The sap of stalk of papaya’s leaf is taken and put in the sick tooth.
  2. Kecubung fruit is put into water for several minutes. Afterward, the fruit is put on the bowl and closed with a holed hard shell of coconut. A short bamboo about 20 cm is used to transfer the fruit’s vapor from the bowl to the tooth hole by putting its one top on the holed hard shell of coconut and another on the tooth hole.    

12. Fever

Medicinal plant used to heal fever is the leaf of bunga raya (shoe flower). The leaf is mixed with water and squeezed to take its mucus. The water is then poured in pad of folded cloth and put on forehead for applying pressure, heat or cold of the body.

13. Chronic Cough

This disease is healed by chewing enau sugar and sirih, its water is then drunk.

14. Sprain

The medicinal plants needed to heal sprain are:

  1. Young sembatu banana tree
  2. Bunga bakung leaf

Direction to make ramuan and to use

The young sembatu banana tree is burned to become softer, and afterward squeezed and smeared on the spraining part of body. The bunga bakung leaf is also burned and smeared by coconut milk. The leaf is put on the spraining part of body when it is still warm.

15. Rheumatism

To heal this disease, the Malays juts need to take kumis kucing leaves and boil them in high degree hot water. The water is then drunk three times in a day.

16. Tuberculosis

This disease is usually healed by waru leaves. The leaves are squeezed to take half cup of water from them. The water is boiled and then drunk when it is still warm.
