Indonesia Gathers Support to Protect Cultural Heritage

Denpasar, Bali - In order to protect the wisdom of traditional cultures, genetic resources, and folk stories, Indonesia, through the Foreign Affairs Department, is gathering support to establish an international legal frame work by facilitating a meeting for 20 developing countries who are members of Like Minded Countries.

According to the department’s director of economic and social-cultural agreement, Damos Dumali Agusman, the meeting is expected to produce an initial draft of an international law instrument that will lead negotiations in the meeting with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

“This will be a progress as developed countries have always rejected it before,” he said, Tuesday (24/11).

The result of the negotiation with WIPO will be submitted to WIPO’s general court by 2011.

The court will consider it as materials for a Diplomatic Conference in 2012 where a treaty will be adopted.

The treaty will allow developing countries to protect their assets. They can take benefit of this by commercializing the assets. “Up to now, there has been no clear regulation about this,” he said. (ROFIQI HASAN)
