Appreciating Value Of Quality Teachers

Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam - Quality teachers are the key to producing excellent students that was the central message resonating at Brunei's 20th Teachers' Day celebrations at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Berakas yesterday.

His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam joined more than 1,000 teachers at the Plenary Hall of the ICC to mark the annual event which was declared a school holiday for all teachers and students.

Accompanying His Majesty were His Royal Highness Prince Hj AlMuhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office, His Royal Highness Prince Hj Sufri Bolkiah, His Royal Highness Prince Jefri Bolkiah and His Royal Highness Prince 'Abdul Malik.

This year's theme, "Glorious Teachers, Excellent Students", emphasises the importance of quality teachers who have the right characteristics to produce exceptional students.

Upon arrival, His Majesty was greeted by Minister of Education Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia Hj Abu Bakar Hj Apong and other cabinet ministers.

The minister highlighted the integral role teachers play in their students' lives, both academically and ethically. "Great teachers are not only concerned with possessing breadth of knowledge, but this knowledge must also be coupled with a generous and noble character."

"Thanks to the wise leadership of His Majesty, Brunei has achieved a level of development and progress in education comparable to most other countries," said Pehin Dato Hj Abu Bakar.

"These efforts were, are and will be improved to achieve a better quality of education in line with Vision 2035. One such effort is improving the quality of our teachers."

Following the minister's speech, His Majesty delivered his titah, and presented awards to 20 exceptional teachers under four categories.

The monarch also observed a choir performance by primary school students and had a photo session with all the Teachers' Day award recipients and greeted other teachers before leaving.

Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (IGCBS) Datin Hjh Adina Othman said that the Special Teachers' Day Appreciation Award was "great".

"I hope that it encourages the other teachers to want to do better," she said.

She said that teachers are one of the most honourable professions and that the society as a whole "depend on teachers".

Deputy Principal of Sports School Ummi Kalthum Abdul Karim, who was a gold medallist in the B class (50kg to 551cg) at various silat events, including the Singapore 1993 Southeast Asian (Sea) Games also lauded the achievements of the award recipients, particularly the ones who received special mentions and labelled them as "fine examples".

"Every year, I notice only senior citizens were awarded for their work, which is great, but it's also nice to see that the younger generation of teachers are recognised for their work," she said.

She added: "This award will also mean that there are opportunities for the younger generation and will motivate them to reach higher."
