Wakatobi Gets Mobile Library with 1,250 Books
Kendari, Indonesia - Wakatobi`s public library has received a donation of 1.250 books and a boat to house the books from the central library of North Sulawesi province, the district`s chief librarian said.
"The donated books will fill a boat that will function as a mobile library," La Mego R, head of Wakatobi`s public library, said here Wednesday.
North Sulawesi Province`s central library had donated the boat to serve as monile library because Wakatobi district consists of numerous small islands. The district`s territory was mostly made up of water.
"Approximately 97 percent of Wakatobi district`s territory is sea so that most of its people`s activity is conducted at sea, and therefore the most effective way to promote reading in the region is by operating a mobile library, he said.
"In North Sulawesi, people go about their daily business on land, so a mobile library there would be a carried by a car," he said.
He said Wakatobi`s public library had also received financial assistance for the procurement of 2,000 books for distribution among 100 village librar and sub-district libraries.
"We also received 750 books from a Wakatobi native who now lives in Gresik, East Java," he said. (Uu.KR-MDR/HAJM/A014/P003)
