Call to Support Reading Culture
Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam - A strong and durable reading culture is the main core of an advanced nation as the rise and fall of a certain country depends on the citizens' level of thinking minds particularly the younger generation.
This is a fact that is undeniable as it has been proven that the reading culture clearly leads to a highly civilised nation and community, said Permanent Secretary II at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, Dato Paduka Hj Mohd Hamid bin Hj Mohd Jaafar.
He spoke at the Group Story Telling Competition yesterday where he was the guest of honour. It was held at the Dewan Digadong of the MCYS building.
He said the sultanate is an independent, terdaulat' nation and possesses an image and status that is looked upon by the the international community.
In directing and leading the nation to an advanced status in the near future, there is a need to produce educators of calibre, administrators of vision, mature thinkers with a forward looking vision, economists, scientists and all levels of knowledgeable, skillful, visionary and positive thinking community.
These will be hard to achieve unless there is a strong interest in a reading culture among the community's youths, said the Permanent Secretary II.
Towards making the reading culture a strong practice among the community here, parents should take an important role in instilling love for books in their children.
The reading culture needs to be instilled as one of the living cultures of the Bruneian community by investing in suitable reading materials of children's preferences and creating a reading corner or a mini library at home.
Encouraging or taking, the young ones to bookshops or the library to dig for knowledge will later build the interest and expose them to more reading habits or practice.
Updated information is very much needed to determine the nation's development and socio-economic growth.
Towards this, the government of f lis Majesty the Sultan and Yang DiPertuan of Negara Brunei Darussalam has provided various services that all are directed to the government's vision to make the citizens a community which continuously thinks creatively and be competitive in the ICT era by making reading practice as a strong foundation in the community.
