Indonesia Officially Opens Batik Gallery
Jakarta, Indonesia- Located in the area of the JakartaTextileMuseum, the Gallery is over 1,300 square feet with nine separate rooms. Batik from many regions in Indonesia are showcased in collections of fabrics, clothing, crafts, and decoration from 1990 to 2009.
[Jero Wacik, Minister of Culture and Tourism, Republic of Indonesia]:
"Now there is a gallery of batik in the textile museum in the capital city of Jakarta. Just visit it. For people who want to see various kinds of Batik, just visit the gallery. This gallery has become a tourist attraction, as well as a place for learning. All museums in Indonesia are actually places of learning, learning about the past, so that we have a pride in the past. This will give us the power to face the future.”
Space in the gallery is limited with the capacity to display only around 125 pieces from about 600 existing collections. But the entire collection can be enjoyed because the gallery uses a monthly rotating system.
Glass showcases protect the gallery batiks from direct contact with hands. And all the lighting in the gallery is soft since batiks are sensitive to light and heat.
The Indonesian government plans to overcome the space limitations in the Gallery of Batik by opening the largest BatikMuseum in the world before 2014.
UNESCO honored Indonesian batik as “Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity” on October 2nd, one year ago.
That recognition, coupled with the launching of Indonesian National Batik Day every October 2nd, has helped to popularize the usage of batik motifs in various forms and applications, including the automotive market.
