Spectacular Jogja Java Carnival
Yogyakarta, Indonesia - The summit event of Yogyakarta 254th anniversary celebration Jogja Java Carnival (JJC) 2010 was lively, flocked by people along Malioboro road to the main stage at Yogyakarta North Square, Saturday night (10/16). JJC organizer proved that JJC was able to be a significant international tourism and cultural attraction.
The opening ceremony of JJC 2010 at the main stage was officially opened by DIY Governor Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X, Mayor Herry Zudianto and representative of Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Indonesia.
In his opening speech, Sri Sultan stated that Yogyakarta is a city with tolerance as well as the miniature of Indonesia, even, it is the city where creative products were born to go international. JJC 2010 is another evidence which enrich the charm of this cultural and creative city.
“Jogja Java Carnival makes Yoyakarta a more lively city of culture because it explicitly presents the diversity of culture. Artists taking part in giving tangible contributions in the cultural feast were able to magnetize domestic and foreign tourists,” Sultan explained.
Sultan hoped that in the coming event, Jogja Java Carnival will be another icon of Yogyakarta especially for its tourism sector which will further become the icon of international event which gives both entertainment and enlightenment for people.
Meanwhile, Yogyakarta Mayor Herry Zudianto stated that Yogyakarta has been a comfortable and humanist city in almost every aspect and it has a multicultural citizen so as Yogyakarta was announced as one of 12 most habitable cities. “It is hoped that JJC can be a universal cultural feast which will go international because there are two main supporting aspects in JJC; first, it is a night feast and second, it is indeed potential for an international event,” Herry Zudianto asserted.
The main stage at the North Square was crowded by thousands of people since early afternoon. They were all enthusiastically waiting for the parade and carnival by over 1000 artists. JJC parade started with dance performance and fragment of Taman Pintar, continued by the performance of lines of wayang characters on in-line skate, Yogyakarta bike club, circus, reog and jathilan groups, convoy of golden chariot carrying married couple of Kraton Ngayogyakarta, Solo and Cirebon.
Another lively spectacle was the procession of foreign students wearing traditional clothing followed by the art performance of Suriname and Thailand. The empyrean life was also presented through the scene of City of Angel with its fairyland. Artists’s concern on the impact of global warming was presented by their wearing trash followed by replica of polluted globe.
JJC 210 procession was deliberately arranged different from the previous year’s, even, it can be said that it is more spectacular in night performance. This encourages JJC to be promoted as international tourism icon.
The parade procession was getting more lively with the performance of SalatigaCarnivalCenter, art group from Sampang (Madura), and traditional dances from many regions in Indonesia. Although it was showering that night, it did not discourage the artists or the people from watching the carnival till the end. JJC 2010, also attended by guests from abroad, finished at around 21.30 WIST with a fireworks and people’s hooray.**(Eko Wahyu)
