Kelantan Seeks Views on Banned Cultural Performances

Kota Baharu, Malaysia - The Kelantan PAS government is seeking the views of cultural experts in a bid to review the ban it imposed on certain cultural performances, the State Assembly was told Thursday.

Local Government, Tourism and Culture executive councillor Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan said that so far cultural activists had not given their views on the matter.

"Until then, the ban imposed on these performances stays," he said in reply to Datuk Abdul Aziz Derashid (BN-Kuala Balah).

Since taking over the state's administration in 1990, PAS had imposed ban on Makyong, Menora and Main Puteri performances because they featured both male and female performers.

PAS, however, reversed the ban on the Dikir Barat on condition that male and female spectators were separated and that indecent words were taken out of the lyrics.

Takiyuddin said the state government also planned to build a Wau Museum (Kite Museum) in Pantai Irama Bachok next year.

Meanwhile, Housing, Works, Utilities and Environment executive councillor Datuk Md Anizam Abd Rahman said the state government had no plan to use generator sets as an alternative source of energy in the event of power outage affecting water treatment plants in the state, saying it would be an expensive undertaking.

"However, we can include the supply of generator sets in the budget for the construction of water treatment plants," he said in reply to Hanifa Ahmad (PAS-Pengkalan Pasir).

Meanwhile, the state government would set up a motorcycle racing circuit to address illegal racing in the state, Human Capital, Youth, Sports and NGO executive councillor Ab Fattah Mahmood said.
