Kuala Lumpur-Chennai Business Council To Promote Culture

Kuala Lumpur-Chennai Business Council To Promote Culture

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - A Kuala Lumpur-Chennai Business Council will be formed soon to promote business and culture between the two cities.

Deputy Minister of Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Datuk M. Saravanan said the council would be headed by the Federal Territories Development Foundation with members comprising businessmen from Kuala Lumpur and Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu in south India.

"The main objective of the council is to implement various projects that can promote culture, education and the traditions of the Malaysian communities in Chennai and at the same time introduce their culture here," he said at a media conference after a visit to the Little India project in Brickfields, here together with Chennai Mayor M.A. Subramaniam on Friday.

He said the council would also endeavour to widen information communication and technology, tourism and business where small entrepreneurs from Chennai would be brought to Malaysia to trade and vice-versa.

"We will also look after the welfare of the Indian workers so that they can carry out their business smoothly," he said.

Subramaniam is leading a 10-member delegation to finalise the proposal to make Kuala Lumpur and Chennai as twin cities.

Chennai, which is categorised as a 'global city' because of its importance in terms of international economy, has a population of about 4.6 million people.

The city, which was formerly known as Madras, is popularly known as India's Kollywood because of its dynamic film making industry which has a large following in Malaysia.
