A Month of Festivities, Competitions in Belait

Kuala Belait, Brunei Darussalam - The tourism project Cheo-Cheo Le Long Belait 2010' to promote Belait District as a holiday destination kick started yesterday with a launching ceremony.

Present to launch the project was Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof.

The deputy minister in his speech praised the initiatives by Belait District Office and Tourism Development Board, Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources to organise the project.

"This is an innovative idea to promote the beauty and uniqueness of Belait District to get locals to spend the holiday in Brunei and also to let them know about the district better as part of Kenali Negara Kitani.

"With such efforts, we will not only learn Belait District as an oil and gas district but we will be aware of the residents' culture and traditions from different ethnic groups and expatriates residing and working in the country; as well as enjoy the district's natural beauty which plays a successful role in the Heart of Borneo project." The Deputy Minister further expressed confidence that this project will generate benefits or useful returns to Belait District and Brunei in general.

The deputy minister further urged all involved to work hard to improve the facilities at tourist attractions and to set up tourism centres.

He also highlighted the Hijrah New Year which falls on this month and he reminded that all activities to not conflict with the religious values in respect to the holy month.

Assistant Belait District Officer Haji Abdul Hamid bin Dato Paduka Haji Abdullah as chairman of the project outlined the objectives of the project which include enlivening Belait District with several projects and activities during the school holidays; promoting the district as a holiday destination; encouraging the communities to generate economic activities by promoting their products; and showcase the skills and talents of the communities.

Among the events planned include the sale of community products; traditional performances from communities of Malay, Belait, Dusun and Iban; Belait Festival; Beach Festival and Belait Challenge.

Side events include tug-of-war, Seborneo Mukun Festival, physical challenges and kite competition.

At the launch, the organisers set up 28 tents and 25 booths for food and drink stall operators apart from exhibition and sale of mukim and village products.

Also present at the event was Belait District Officer Mestusin bin OKS Hj Tuba as the project's special advisor.

Yesterday, the deputy minister and other guests were entertained with stage performances from Belait ethnic groups such as traditional dances of Ngajat, Alai Sikap, Ancayau, Silat, Tarian Megalai and Joget Mukun Menyubuh.

Among programmes lined up to mark the Cheo-Cheo Le Long are Bicycle Expedition on Dec 5; Liang Beach Festival on Dec 12; Belait Cultural Evening on Dec 17; Pesta Mukun Se-Borneo on Dec 18; Belait Festival on Dec 19, ethnic cultural performances on Dec 25; Cabaran Belait on Dec 26; tug-of-war competition on Dec 26 and Cheo-Cheo Le Long Gala Night on Dec 31. Most of the events will take place at the open field along Jalan Maulana.
