Malays Must Have Strong Command of Jawi
Shah Alam - Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim wants religious schools in Selangor to promote the Jawi script among students as it is part of the Malay heritage.
"We want students to have a strong command of Jawi as it is the identity of the Malays. This will also help them understand Quranic verses which are written in Jawi," he told reporters after opening a Teachers` Day celebration here today.
Abdul Khalid said a strong command of Jawi would also help in understanding the Arab language, the foundation of the Jawi script.
He proposed that a special class be created for learning Jawi as this would make students master other subjects which have texts written in Jawi.
A strong command of Jawi would also revive the fortune of newspapers published in the Jawi script.
