Yogyakarta Seeks To Step Up Cooperation With Malaysia

Yogyakarta - The Yogyakarta Special Region, rich in art and culture and a genial people, desires to step up cooperation with Malaysia to promote tourism, education and trade activities.

Deputy Mayor Haryadi Suyuti said relations between the people of Yogyakarta and Malaysians were improving with the availability of direct flights between Kuala Lumpur and Yogyakarta provided by Malaysian carriers Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia.

"We are eager to learn from Tourism Malaysia which has attracted 21 million tourists to Malaysia last year," he said, pointing out that Yogyakarta drew 1.7 million visitors, among them 150,000 foreigners, last year.

Haryadi, who spoke to Bernama during a study tour by about 30 Asean journalists from May 18 to 21, said he planned to discuss with Tourism Malaysia the possibility of sending its officers on a study tour here or conduct training for Yogyakarta`s officers in Malaysia.

He said the high quality of education in Malaysia, particularly in management, IT and business, should make the country a top choice for tertiary students from Yogyakarta.

"The Gajah Mada University here has been accepting many medical students from Malaysia for a long time and we want more of our students to take up courses in Malaysia," he said.
