International Seminar, Indonesia – Malaysia Update 2008

Tightening Collective Spirit of the Same Race Nations!

Yogyakarta, MelayuOnline.com- Multifarious differences in the relationship between Indonesia and Malaysia is an avoidable matter. Starting from the era of Soekarno until now, it seems that there is no significant change leading to a better relationship between these two countries. Political issues such as conflict over land and the abuse of Indonesian labors still appear as one of numerous causes affecting the relationship. No matter how political issue is arisen, some efforts for creating the same perception about cultural facts on which the similarity is stronger than differences. Facing the reality that Indonesia and Malaysia have the same race, that is Malay, both must begin building good relationship for a better future. One of the efforts leading to establish good relationship between Indonesia and Malaysia is Indonesia-Malaysia Update 2008 organized by Gadjah Mada University, Indonesia in cooperation with Malaya University, Malaysia.

Indonesia-Malaysia Update 2008 will be begun on Tuesday, May 27th, 2008 completed on Thursday, May 29th, 2008. There will be International Seminar, Business Meeting, and Field Trip during this program.

About a hundred people from Indonesia and Malaysia will participate at International Seminar conducted in Seminar Room, at Pascasarjana Building, Gadjah Mada University. The seminar will be conducted in both symposium and focus group discussion. Each participant will deliver presentations about five themes grappling with the issue of relationship between Indonesia and Malaysia. The committee will divide the forum into five groups discussing various themes. International Seminar will be held on Wednesday, May 27th – 28th 2008. Come as keynote speaker is the Dean of Faculty of Letter and Social Science, Malaya University, Prof. Dato` Mohamad Abu Bakar.

On Wednesday, May 28th 2008 starting from 1 p.m., Business Meeting session will be conducted in Balai Kajian dan Pengembangan Budaya Melayu – BKPBM (Center for Research and Development of Malay Culture), Yogyakarta, on Gambiran Street, 85 A. This session will focus on future plans and programs for building the same perception between Indonesia and Malaysia.

The last session of Indonesia – Malaysia Update 2008 is Field Trip to the limelight tourism destinations of Yogyakarta on May 29th, 2008. The participants will be invited watching Ramayana dance-drama in Prambanan Temple, visiting Borobudur, and some handicraft centers in Yogyakarta. This full-day session will be the closing session for Indonesia – Malaysia Update 2008.
