Government`s Involvement in Preserving Local Tradition is a Must

Government`s Involvement in Preserving Local Tradition is a Must

Solo, MelayuOnline.com- Not all local tradition are neglected, some of them remain exists in the heart common people. However, local tradition‘s continuation still takes a great dependence upon the condition of surrounding environment. For example, if forest and sea are well-preserved, local tradition that is available there will exist as well. In contrary, if nature begins deteriorating, there must be specific effort for preserving them.

Such opinion like above was expressed by Dr. Prudentia, MPSS – the Director of Oral Tradition Association (ATL) in the International Workshop “Safeguarding for Intangible Cultural Heritage” Among Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore, at Sahid Jaya Hotel, Solo, Central Java (Saturday, 31/05/08).

The second speakers, Prof. Dr. Chua Soo Pong – full professor at Chinese Dance Institute of Singapore –delivered some extant traditional dances in Korea, China, and Vietnam that remain exist among the modern civilization. He said that those dances have been adjusted with the time hence it can live among the heart of common people.

“The remaining performance art in those countries, sign that local tradition has not been neglected yet by the tradition‘s original owner even though strong force from foreign culture comes in turn. Such reality obviously comes as the result of good cooperation between government and surrounding people working together for preserving their tradition.” Chua Soo Pong said.

Chua Soo Pong said that government‘s involvement in effort to preserve local tradition is a must since it demands huge financial support when he was asked by Mahyudin Al Mudra (The Head of MelayuOnline.com) about the effort to preserve tradition by ignoring economic orientation.

In line with Chua Soo Pong‘s opinion, Dr. Prudentia said that preserving local tradition requires financial support in huge count. Except that, local tradition will be gradually left behind by common people as they cannot gain daily need from it.

Therefore, Oral Tradition Association will continuously encourage and manage local tradition, said Prudentia. In line with ATL‘s effort, MelayuOnline.com also carries out the effort to preserve tradition in non-traditional way for the continuation of local tradition.
