Seminar of Malay Leadership (Malaysia)
Yogyakarta, MelayuOnline.com- Every nation has different types of leadership. A type of leadership plays significant role in developing one nation‘s society. An expression in Malay tradition says “bila rumah tidak bertua//celaka datang bala menimpa//bila negeri tidak beraja//alamat hidup aniaya menganiaya” (Tenas Effendi, 2004: 65). This saying emphasizes the urgency of good leader within one society.
The ability of sultans in Malacca Peninsula (now Malaysia) in upholding their nations since the 1400s A.D. signifies the Malay leadership that is still alive among the Malay people. However, Malay sultans‘ leadership began to deteriorate after the coming of Portuguese in 1511 A.D. The arrival of Portuguese in Malacca Peninsula caused political conflicts between the sultanates leaders, corruption among royal officials, and abuse of power.
Independence has come to Malaysia since 1957 after 400 years of colonialism. Up to now, there are five Prime Ministers – Tunku Abdul Rahman Al-Haj (Father of Independence), Tun Abdul Razak (Father of Development), Tun Hussein Onn (Father of Unity), Tun Dr. Mahathir (Father of Modernisation) dan Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi (Father of Citizen Capital Development)having been ruling Malaysia. – Each Prime Minister above has different leadership characteristic. Under their rule, Malaysia is able to reach remarkable development in politic, economy, and social.
