The Mayor of Pekanbaru Visits BKPBM

Yogyakarta, Melayuonline.com- Drs. H. Herman Abdullah, MM. – the Mayor of Pekanbaru City – visited Balai Melayu – the office building of Balai Kajian dan Pengembangan Budaya Melayu-BKPBM (the Center for Research and Development of Malay Culture) on Wednesday (26/12/2007) 3 p.m. Herman and his entourage were welcomed cordially by Mahyudin Al Mudra – the head of BKPBM – along with BKPBM`s crews.

Mahyudin guided them to look around Balai Melayu and Malay properties within. They observed BKPBM`s works during the last four years ago and made some small talks to MelayuOnline.com`s crews.

Mahyudin has a close relationship with Herman for his position as a counselor of Riau Provincial Government. Hence, during their visit to Balai Melayu, this two hours meeting run friendlily. They made some laughs during the meeting.

Considering the urgency of BKPBM, Herman demanded jokingly that BKPBM move to Pekanbaru, Riau Province. Such demand came out as Riau Province has a vision to be the center for Malay culture in Southeast Asia in 2020. He greatly appreciated BKPBM for its efforts to unify Malay culture beyond geopolitical boundaries. Likewise, he remarked that MelayuOnline.com cleverly offers the information about Malay in comprehensive ways, which have not been carried out yet by other institutions in the world.

In the meeting, Herman promised will totally support MelayuOnline.com through concrete works on developing Malay culture starting in 2008. Herman also asked for help from BKPBM to create a conceptual plan for Malay Museum that will be established in Pekanbaru next year.

“I totally support Melayuonline.com`s efforts to give “enlightenment” and to unify Malay people in the world. Those are great efforts which have not been carried out by local governments in some areas having Malay cultural background.” Herman said. He also conveyed that Melayuonline.com is a priceless portal. At the end of the meeting, Herman gave financial support to succeed National Academic Writing Competition “Political Stance of Malay People.” (RI/brt/12/12-07)
