Battle of the kites at Tungku Beach

Bandar Seri Begawan - Over 100 local kite enthusiasts are set to battle it out in the Kite Festival on August 17 at Tungku Beach at 7.30am.

The event is organised annually by the Organising Working Committee of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam`s birthday celebration to mark the monarch`s 62nd birthday.

The event chairman, Haji Maidin Haji Ahmad said 10 types of traditional kites will be contested at the festival.

This year`s competition, he added, is open to locals, and among the kites used during the day-long event are sikulak and siar manjar.

Members of the public will also have the opportunity to take a closer look at Japanese kite Rokako.

Other activities at the event include a kite colouring contest for children under the age of 12.

Haji Maidin said there is also a karaoke singing competition and a bouncer for children.

The festival will be attended by the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs, Pengiran Abdul Haris bin Pengiran Haji Shahbudin as the guest of honour and who will also be launching the event.

For those interested in participating in the competition, entry forms can be obtained at the Brunei-Muara District Office during office hours. By Achong Tanjong
