No Solution Yet For Vastenburg
The Vasternburg Fortress Of Surakarta City, Central Java
Surakarta, Central Java - The public dialog held by the Surakarta Administration concerning on the plan of a hotel construction in the VastenburgPort area has not yet produced any solution.
Eko Budiardjo, Chairman of the Semarang City Development Protection Council, said he agreed that the heritage, which is now being dominated by private parties, must be protected.
“However, conservation is not always static,” he said.
According to Eko, changes in economical functions are so far achievable, provided they do not violate the regulations.
According to Widya Wijayanti, a member of the Indonesian Heritage Conservation Agency, the conservation of VastenburgPort can be carried out by dividing the area into three zones; a regional commercial zone, a city commercial zone, and a city service facility zone.
However, Gutomo the Work Group Chief from the Central Java Antiquities and Relics Conservation Agency (BP3), said that changes to the port`s functions could damage its historical values.
Meanwhile, Surakarta mayor Joko Widodo promised to organize another dialog.
“What`s important is that we keep looking for a solution,” he said.
