Filipino Students Present Folk Dances
PSD Students Presenting A Folk Dance During The Field Demonstration Marking The Culmination Of The Intramurals
Doha - The diverse culture of the Philippines was showcased through folk dances during the culmination of the two-day Intramurals of the Philippine School Doha (PSD) held at the Al Ahli Sports Club yesterday.
“This is PSD`s first time to conduct field demonstration through Philippine folk dances,” said Alexander S Acosta, PSD School Principal. This year`s theme of PSD Intramurals is `Sports for Environment` supporting the Schools Olympic Day programme of Qatar, said Acosta.
Held annually, the sports event draw thousands of people mostly parents eager to witness the colour and experience the festive atmosphere of the field demonstration which serves as the main highlight of the sports competition.
This year over two thousand students in colourful costumes from pre-school to high school displayed their dancing skills acquired after months of training. Among the dances performed by the high school students were Pantomina de Sorsogon, Sakuting, Tiklos and Salakot dance. Pantomina is a wedding dance originating from the Sorsogn province in Bicol region; Sakuting is an Ilocano dance portraying a mock combat using sticks, Tiklos is a dance depicting volunteerism; while Salakot shows colourful hats.
Most notable among the dances in the elementary level were the Magkaugnay dance by the Grade 3 pupils and the Muslim dances from the Intermediate department which included the Malong dance. Malong dance is a contribution from the Muslim Mindanano province which shows the many ways of donning the malong (traditional tube dress). Magkaugnay, on the other hand, fits perfectly on the theme of the event since it reaffirms the interconnectedness and interdependence of objects of nature and people.
The pre-school pupils also wowed the audience with their adorable costumes and movements as they dance to varied tunes including New Wave hits.
Apart from enhancing the students` psychomotor skills, the activity was also a chance for them to be reminded of the rich cultural heritage of the Philippines being separated from their home country by great distance. The occasion also saw various sports competitions such as basketball, volleyball, table tennis, badminton, chess and scrabble among others.
