Malays Should Give Priority To Time Management – Annuar
Kuala Lumpur - The Malays can be champions in any field if they put greater emphasis on time management, Bernama Chairman Datuk Seri Annuar Zaini said.
"One weakness in the Malay culture is time management. So long as we don`t strive to change this, it will give justification as to why the objective of the New Economic Policy cannot be achieved in 30 years.
"This is because the element of time is not there to pressure us to achieve the objective... we tend to think that we have some kind of extra time," he said when closing the Second Malay Cultural Congress here Tuesday.
Annuar said the lack of good time management had become a norm rather than an exception.
He said that so long as the Malays did not observe strict time management, it would be difficult for them to become world champions.
"Even in football, you have to score within 90 minutes," he said.
Meanwhile, Annuar expressed the hope that the government would increase its investment in inculcating competitiveness in the Malay culture.
He said that the Singapore government in 1958 had allocated RM100,000 to a Singapore Malay organisation to carry out studies on the Malay culture and the role of the community in the republic`s nation-building.
At that time, the Malays were only 12 per cent of the Singapore population, he said.
In contrast, the Federal Government at that time only provided RM1,500 for the First Malay Cultural Congress, which was held for three days in Melaka On Dec 30, 1957.
"Among the contributors to the congress was Lee Publisher of Singapore which contributed RM500 followed by the Panitia Bahagian Selatan Singapura with a contribution of RM2,673," he said.
The Second Malay Cultural Congress, held at the Wisma Sejarah here, is organised by the National Culture and Arts Department, Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka, Federation of National Writers Association and the Malaysian Historical Society.
