Thai PM Airs Education Plan For South
Bangkok- PM Gen Surayud Chulanont has pledged to promote education among residents of the southernmost provinces of Thailand as part of a long-term government plan to resolve unrest in the restive south.
Addressing the public in his weekly TV programme on Saturday, Gen Surayud said education in varied subjects will be offered to young people in Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani so that they could qualify for jobs in the far south as well as in Malaysia.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister said that unrest in the southernmost provinces, particularly involving large-scale bombings and other acts of violence, had gradually reduced, though assaults on individual targets remained.
Gen Surayud said persons arrested in suspected connection with insurgent activities will be treated justly during questioning and will not be physically abused as earlier alleged.
If found innocent of connections with the violence and released, such persons may be offered a vocational training course.
