60 Hectares Of Conservation Areas In Batam Threatened

Batam, Riau Archipelago - Around 60 hectare of marine conservation areas in Batam are threatened. Batam`s head of Sea Resources Controlling and Rehabilitation, Witono, said that many foreign boats harbor in Batam and their anchors ruin the coral reefs.

Head of the Water Pollution Subdirectorate from the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Department, Erlina Lusiati, has asked cargo and tanker boats harboring at Galang island, Batam, in Riau Archipelago, to move immediately as they threaten the sea biota.

“The sea where the boats harbor is only 30 meters deep,” she said last week.

According to the regulation by Transportation Department, the boats should harbor at least two miles from the nearest island.

For this reason, the Maritime Affairs Department ask the harbor to be moved to Nipah Island.

“We will send a recommendation letter,” said Lusi. Rumbadi Dalle
